What makes a great web page?  Develop
Your Website's Six Parts

Content Navigation
Organization Performance
Design Credibility

Content
Provide your visitors with content that leads to your Most Desired Response, MDR.  Think of your website as a one to one sales presentation.  Imagine yourself sitting down in the same room discussing how your product or service can fill your customers wants and desires.  Use words that elicits emotion or the feeling that your product or service will provide the visitor. This should be the message that shouts from the website.

Details and facts are fine but they do not elicit a emotion or desire to purchase the product in most cases.  Your strongest selling points should be on the first page your viewer sees.  You don't want visitors having to click to find out why this is so important.  Direct your total message to reflect what you want the visitor to do. Content, content, content, is the most important part of a website.  Give the viewer something for their time.  Many sites have cool graphics but not much else and other sites have many links but very little original content. Stress the visitor's benefits that your product or service will provide.

Organization
Organize your content in a simple straight forward manner.  Is your page focused?  Start by writing an outline of your content.  Put the most important items near the top.  Write your copy once, eliminate half the words and write it again.  Organize your information in a manner that is quickly scanned.  Make use of headlines or lists to summarize topics.  Use bold and/or color for headlines or topic headings.

Design
Effective design or web page layout  can be summed up in three words, simplicity, readability, and consistency.  More is not necessarily better when it comes to web page design.  Keep your fonts and color choices down to two fonts and two main colors.  Avoid blinking or distracting graphics or color combinations.  Make use of white or empty areas, the goal is not to fill every nook and cranny with info or graphics.  Use the  KISS principle, (Keep It Simple Stupid).

If visitors come to your site and can't read the text you've lost that visitor. Make sure the fonts and the background you use are legible.  A decorative script font may be aesthetically pleasing but very difficult to read.  Stick to the basic Times, veranda, or default fonts.  Choose colors for your text and background that contrast in a pleasing way.  Stick with short sentences and paragraphs.

Your website should be consistent from page to page so visitors know they are still within your site.  Always use the same fonts and colors throughout your site.  Use the same header graphic or navigation bar on all pages.  This is easily accomplished by copying your main page, open a new page, paste, and then delete the main page text.

Navigation
Be professional and don't leave your visitors on a dead end page.  Ease of navigation between your web pages is easily accomplished by use of a navigation bar, menu, and bottom of the page links.  You want  to make it as easy as possible for your visitor to stay on your website so they don't leave prematurely.

Performance
Don't go overboard with graphics.  If your page takes to long to load your potential visitor will click 'stop loading' and you've lost that potential customer. A  GIF file will generally load faster than a JPEG file.  Try to keep your page load time under 15 seconds at 56 modem.  Keep your web pages below four scrollable pages.  Check your site out with different browsers.

Credibility
Create a site that speaks individually to each visitor and how your products and services will personally benefit them.  Your website should be more about how you can help the visitor/potential customer than about your company.  Your site should give the feeling of credibility, professionalism, and confidence.  Be sure to give contact information.

If we were to recommend only one book on building a successful website it would be the award winning "Make Your Site Sell" with over 1000 powerful pages is the number one handbook for anyone serious about marketing their website.  "...one of the most significant downloads of my business life."   Click Here

Publish / Upload
Okay, you've got your website assembled and your ready to upload to your hosting server.  Before you do though check your spelling and make sure your links are properly addressed. The FrontPage is designed to upload your web pages directly from the Explorer browser.

But in order to access your cgi-bin other related files on your hosting server you will need to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol).  FTP software allows you to transfer files from your computer to the server and also transfer files from the server to your computer.  While it may sound  complicated, it is probably the easiest part of the entire process.

FTP software provides a window which lists all of your directories and files in your computer on the left side of the screen and once you have connected with your web address,  all the directories and files on your server on the right side of your screen.  Click on the file you wish to upload, click on the folder where you want the file to go in the server, and click the upload arrow.  If you need to download a file from the server click the corresponding files and click the download arrow.  You will be amazed at the speed.  Free FTP Download

Generally you call your homepage web site index and you will file this in the www folder. File your other web pages in the www folder and name them accordingly.  Be sure to include the file extensions ei: name.htm or name.html.   Don't forget to upload all of your gif and jpg graphics.  Contact your hosting service if you need help, that's what they're there for.

Templates and Flash
While building one's website design from scratch can be a rewarding experience, there is no shame in utilizing a well built template.  Many times just viewing a wide template selection will invigorate the creative juices.  Flash and multimedia presentations should be used selectively.  Always allow viewers to access the same information in a standard HTML format.  We have seen Flash intro's that took so long to download that the visitor just leaves.  Have also seen some very impressive sales presentations utilizing multimedia.  When utilizing these types of formats, remember to keep your target audience in mind.
